The owners of the Gold Coast Airport say almost 500,000 people passed through its terminals last year (2008).
Queensland Airports Limited say passenger numbers grew by almost 15 per cent from 2007.
Airport spokeswoman Elissa Keenan says the introduction of new international services helped boost the numbers.
“We’ve seen our internationals increase 87 per cent over December 2007,” she said.
“It’s great to see international tourists coming directly to the Gold Coast and helping our local economy.”
It makes you wonder how many of these tourists are booking direct with the airlines, accommodation and hire car companies.
